Year 6 English Resources
Welcome to the Year 6 English Hub. Year 6 is an important and rewarding stage in a child's educational journey. As pupils prepare for SATs and the transition to secondary school, they continue to develop the reading, writing and communication skills that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
The resources and guidance within this section are designed to support children in developing secure foundations across reading, grammar, punctuation, spelling and writing. By combining high expectations with a calm, structured and purposeful approach, children can make excellent progress whilst building confidence in their own abilities.
Reading and Comprehension
The Year 6 SATs reading paper assesses a range of skills, including retrieval, inference, vocabulary and explanation. Strong reading skills extend far beyond SATs, helping children tackle complex texts across subjects.
Grammar & Spelling
Grammar, punctuation and spelling provide the foundations for effective communication. Secure SPaG knowledge enables children to write accurately, communicate clearly and express their ideas with confidence.
Writing & Expression
Writing is a powerful way children communicate ideas and creativity. Developing confidence and stamina as a writer during Year 6 ensures pupils are well prepared for the growing expectations of secondary school.
What Makes the Biggest Difference?
I have found that children make the strongest progress when they read regularly, develop an ambitious vocabulary, and receive clear feedback. These small, consistent steps leading to meaningful progress growing in confidence.
- Read regularly and discuss findings
- Develop an ambitious vocabulary
- Answer comprehension questions effectively
- Apply grammar within writing
- Receive clear, actionable feedback
- Develop resilience for new challenges
Preparing for SATs and Beyond
SATs are an important milestone, providing children with an opportunity to demonstrate the progress they have made. Effective preparation helps pupils build confidence and approach assessments with a calm and positive mindset, while Year 6 also nurtures the independence and literacy skills crucial for reaching the exciting opportunities ahead.
