Year 6 Maths Resources

After many years supporting pupils in upper Key Stage 2, I've found that children rarely struggle because they "can't do maths". More often, there are a handful of common barriers that prevent them from reaching their full potential. The encouraging news is that all of these areas can be improved with the right support.

Why Do Some Children Find Year 6 Maths Difficult?

Gaps in prior learning

Difficulty interpreting worded problems

Weak mathematical reasoning skills

Anxiety around tests and assessments

Limited fluency with number facts

Lack of confidence with unfamiliar questions

Working too quickly and avoidable errors

Finding it difficult to explain thinking

Building Secure Foundations

Many Year 6 difficulties can be traced back to gaps in earlier learning. Taking time to address these leads to rapid improvements.

Teaching Children How to Think

Success is about more than methods. Children need to explain reasoning, justify answers and develop flexible thinking.

Improving Confidence

Confidence and attainment are closely linked. Children who believe they can succeed are more willing to persevere and take risks.

What Makes the Biggest Difference?

Through my work in primary education, I have found that children make the strongest progress when support focuses on these key pillars:

Developing Mathematical Fluency

When key skills like times tables and mental arithmetic become automatic, children can focus on complex problem-solving.

Tackling Misconceptions Early

Small misunderstandings can become significant barriers. Identifying them quickly helps build secure, long-term understanding.

Targeted Practice

Not all practice is equal. Carefully chosen questions produce greater progress than completing large quantities of similar work.

Developing Independence

One of the most important goals is helping children become confident, independent learners who can approach unfamiliar problems with resilience and determination. My Year 6 resources are designed to identify individual needs and build these skills step-by-step.
